Create an application
Open the Discord developer portal, create an application, and copy its bot token into your dashboard.
Turn on Message Content
Under Privileged Gateway Intents, enable Message Content Intent. Without it Discord will not let any bot read messages.
Invite it to your server
Generate an invite URL with the bot scope, tick the channel permissions it needs, and open the link.

Discord hides message text from bots by default. Without that switch your assistant receives an event saying somebody spoke, but not what they said. Every Discord bot that reads messages needs it.

View Channels and Send Messages are enough for most setups. Add Read Message History if you want it to understand a conversation it just joined. Grant nothing else unless you need it.
